The Ten Essentials Plus
The Mountaineers in the 1930ís came up with a list of the minimum you should carry when you entered the wild; this was called the Ten Essentials. It was not just a survival kit but those things needed to have a safe and enjoyable adventure; if then things went wrong you had the survival essentials as well. The plus were a few items added later. When should it be taken; every time you go out into the wild, whether a few hour day hike, backpacking or a several month expedition to a true wilderness.
This kit is set up not only as a survival kit but those items that you will use daily. Quite often the kits I see are either too large and end up not being carried or are so small they are minimally effective. The items included are ones needed everyday for backpacking and camping so this satisfies those requirements and with the storage capacity also provides a day hike capability (or for ultralight hikers 2-3 day capability).
